When people hear the terms “biometric authentication” and “wearable technology”, they often think they’re something from a futuristic movie. But, the reality is that these technologies are here today. At PayPal and eBay, we love technology, but we like it even better when we use it to make consumers’ lives easier. We announced this back at Mobile World Congress, but the day has finally come when Samsung Galaxy S5 users in 25 countries can ditch their usernames and passwords and simply login to PayPal with their fingerprint to shop at the millions of businesses that accept PayPal on mobile web sites, mobile apps and in stores.
Not only is this way more convenient than typing in a lengthy username and password on a tiny mobile device, it’s also more secure. In fact, it’s a convenience that many consumers are ready for. A recent survey by the National Cyber Security Alliance and PayPal found that more than half (53 percent) of Americans are overwhelmingly comfortable replacing passwords with newer security technologies such as fingerprint authentication.
Many of us grew up watching “Star Trek,” so we also have to mention that the PayPal app is coming out on the Gear 2 and Gear Fit today. (Our friends at eBay already have an app there.) While we are all too often glued to our mobile phones, there are still times where we probably wish we didn’t have to take out my phone (or my wallet, for that matter) to do things like shop at my favorite lunch spot. That’s why we’re making it easy for Gear 2 and Gear Fit users to check-in to pay with PayPal at thousands of stores in eight countries. They can also conveniently check their PayPal balance and transaction history, and save offers from local businesses – all from their wrist.
If you’re on the fence about whether or not to get a Samsung Galaxy S5 or Gear 2, watch our demo videos below, check out the $50 and more in offers we have for S5 users, and hopefully it will make you think twice about sticking with your current device!
In fact, eBay is making it really easy for consumers to make the upgrade by selling their old devices. In the US, a cell phone is sold every 4 seconds, and drilling down even further, a Samsung cell phone is sold every 22 seconds on eBay. Plus, if consumers make the switch, they can go to eBay Electronics for all of the latest Galaxy S5 accessories.
