POWER[UP] Conference Gives Interns Insights on the Business

eBay Inc.’s summer interns recently got a chance to dive deep into our business at the POWER[UP] 2014 conference in San Francisco.

Several hundred interns flew in from across North America for the two and half day event, organized by our University Programs team. They gained insight into many different aspects of eBay’s business through keynotes from executives and smaller breakout sessions.

The interns also got to know each other by getting together for fun activities in the evenings, like taking a tour of the city and hanging out in a room full of rescue puppies.

They learned from Alan Marks, eBay Inc. senior vice president of corporate communications, how their day-to-day work affects the company’s hundreds of millions of customers. “Commerce is an ecosystem and our company is an ecosystem. The stronger we are together, the stronger we are as a company,” Marks told them in his opening keynote. “Help us change the world.”

Interns got to hear directly from several members of our leadership team, who made it a point to offer advice and network with them after their sessions, documented in a series of selfies on social media.

In his keynote, eBay Marketplaces President Devin Wenig, for example, shared “Wenig’s Words to the Wise,” his top pieces of career advice. “Who you are and how you handle yourself is as important as the things you know,” Wenig said.

In his closing keynote, Chief Product Officer RJ Pittman linked the company’s plans with the work interns are doing this summer.

“The future of eBay is right here in this room,” Pittman said. “Make the most of your time here. Dive in and roll up your sleeves.”
