eBay Inc. and Chinese fashion retailer Xiu.com said Monday the two companies were teaming up to launch a “best of eBay” curated shopping site for Chinese online buyers, as the online marketplace expands in the world’s most populous country.

The partnership, called eBay Style, gives Chinese consumers access to roughly 5,000 well-known fashion brands in apparel, handbags, shoes, accessories, and other lifestyle products that have been carefully selected by Xiu for the Chinese market. Buying from Xiu will differ from buying directly from the eBay website, as eBay Style will not only offer payment methods already familiar to Chinese consumers, but it will also translate all eBay products into simplified Chinese and provide Chinese-speaking customer service support.

Xiu will also only surface new goods from established U.S. sellers and arrange for additional quality control inspections.

The deal signals eBay’s commitment to expanding in China, where the company has experienced mixed success since entering the country in the early 2000s. But as the number of Chinese customers seeking items that are either too pricey or not available in China continues to grow, eBay management felt as if the time was right to take a commercially sound first step back into China’s competitive online market.

“Today, Chinese consumers are increasingly coming to eBay and we have seen a 40% year on year increase of goods bought by Chinese consumers navigating eBay.com in English,” said Melanie Tan, vice president for eBay. “We believe that in the future Chinese consumers will use eBay as a passport to global fashion styles, especially for leading women’s brands and accessories, and menswear, because our broad selection of new, branded, and designer merchandise will be unmatched in China.”

Learning from eBay’s past experiences in China, eBay Style is, by design, a very focused shopping site dedicated to a curated and localized buying experience. The site leverages Xiu.com’s experience in imports and translation, as well as dealing with international shipping and customs clearance, domestic delivery to Chinese buyers, customer service and returns, to operate the site. In return, eBay is providing technical and business support, including a brand marketing, public relations and social media campaign, as well as new smartphone and tablet applications.

The resulting platform will provide customers with a one-stop shopping destination dedicated to getting Chinese customers what they need.

“Our mission is to bring the best of the world to China, so eBay, with its global access, is an ideal partner for us,” said George Ji, CEO of Xiu.com. “Through our curation efforts, we also hope to introduce a new, more inspiring buying experience to Chinese consumers.”
