This summer was filled with charitable activity at eBay Inc., through projects organized by local GIVE teams.

Salt Lake City marked a “Summer of Giving,” with 20 events resulting in thousands of dollars and 680 volunteers giving 89 hours of their time supporting local and international nonprofits. They cleaned up park trails, sorted medical supplies, helped put on an art festival, took seniors on a trip to the zoo, repaired bicycles and assembled care packages for U.S. military service members. Check out photos here.

The Bay Area GIVE Team carried out two fruitful drives benefiting low-income children in the San Francisco Bay Area. Partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank on a summer Share Your Lunch drive, $14,350 was raised from employee donations. To help kids prepare to go back to school, the team partnered with Family Giving Tree, and employees donated $3,200 and 122 backpacks. A Facebook campaign led to a company donation of an additional 5,000 backpacks.

In Arizona, the GIVE Team partnered with Rebuilding Together and sent 25 volunteers to fix up a home for a low-income family. The team also held a blood drive through the American Red Cross that resulted in 64 units of blood, enough to save 192 lives. Like many GIVE teams, Arizona held a back-to-school backpack drive and filled 105 backpacks, which will be distributed to children from low-income families through the nonprofit iCan.

Ireland GIVE Team members rallied 104 volunteers to participate in a Row-a-Thon benefiting Barnardos, an organization that delivers programs serving children and their families.

In Omaha, the team held a Strike Out Hunger Drive supporting the Food Bank of the Heartland. Through employee and company donations $10,000 was raised, in addition to 4,101 pounds of food.

With another school year just around the corner, eBay is partnering with Family Giving Tree to support their Back to School Drive. The campaign helps underserved children in the Bay Area get the supplies they need to succeed academically.

Part of a several-year relationship with the Family Giving Tree that includes an annual holiday giving drive, the Bay Area GIVE Team has been running an internal Back to School campaign for the past few years. In July, the GIVE Team conducted a drive to collect backpacks. Employees shopped for backpacks and purchased age-appropriate supplies, which were then delivered to Family Giving Tree. The team donated 116 completed backpacks to students in need.

For the first time, eBay Giving Works is extending this annual tradition to the external eBay community. The team launched a Facebook campaign that enables eBay enthusiasts to share the company’s commitment to positive social change. For each person who visits the Facebook page and fills out a form, eBay will donate a backpack, filled with all the essentials, up to a total of 5,000 backpacks. There’s still time to participate: The campaign ends on Sunday, August 5.

To support this effort, Christopher Payne, Senior Vice President, eBay Marketplaces, North America, organized hundreds of employees to help stuff backpacks on Aug. 2 in San Jose. Employees completed a total of 3,000 backpacks.

“One of the core values of eBay is to make a difference in the world; to give back,” Christopher said. “And, so today gives us a little opportunity to make a difference for Bay Area school students as they head back to school. When we give them a loaded backpack, we give them a jump-start on the year. Everyone’s fired up; enjoying it.”

“Because of eBay’s donation, Family Giving Tree was able to serve five more schools than anticipated,” said Micki Sever, Global Citizenship Promotions. “We’re thrilled to help make a real difference by giving these students a great head start to the school year.”

Family Giving Tree is one of the featured nonprofits in eBay checkout this week.
